06.05.08 - OIL SPILLAGE SINCLAIRS BAY

Attentions to all Anglers...

The public is being advised to keep off the beach at Sinclair's Bay, near Wick, following the discovery of tar balls, which have been washed up along the length of the shoreline.

The Highland Council is working with other agencies to clean up the beach.

There is no evidence of oiling of birds or other wildlife.

A spokesman said: “This is not a major incident. However, we have erected signs at either end of the beach advising the public to keep off until we have completed the clean up, which involves collecting the tar balls by hand. We will be working with the Maritime Coastguard Agency to identify the origin of the oil, which appears to have been at sea for some time. We are also checking other nearby beaches for evidence of these balls of oil.”

30.04.08 - Wick River April 2008

The second salmon of the season was landed by committee member David Risbridger on 12th April. It was caught on a 1.5 inch Gordon's Fancy Tube Fly in the wash Pool .Despite reasonable water and the river being fished quite hard it was not until the 30th before any more catches were recorded. Ian Swanson had a 10 pounder from the Pot on Fly and Mark Hutchison had a 8.5 pounder from the Mill Stream on the worm. With good coditions and water levels at the end of April, the prospects are looking good for the start of May !!

12.10.07 - Wick River October 2007

The last two weeks of the season saw the river running at its lowest level for months and this was reflected in the returns.
During the last few days lucky anglers included George Doull Jnr, 15lbs from the Pot, Walter Crothers and Jimmy Dunnett one each from the Pot whilst lower down stream George Gunn had one at 9 lbs as did David Plowman. Donald Rosie had a good day on the 11th adding another hatrick to his total. David Risbridger reported a brace of sea liced Sea Trout, both at 2lbs.

31.07.07 - Wick River July 2007

Wick River July 2007 Photo July has been a good month for the Wick, the start saw another large spate and we were lucky to get continual top ups throughout the whole month resulting in excellent angling conditions. It was encouraging to see some really nice quality Salmon around 9 – 12lbs being caught along with the first of the Grilse.
Monday the 2nd saw the Pot produce sealiced 11 pounders to George Mackay, Tommy Bain & Paul Bain. Also Alan Farquhar landed and sportingly returned a 7 lb coloured Salmon on Fly from The Long Shank . Later that day Ian Dunnet had a grilse from McPhails.

30.06.07 - Wick River June 2007

Wick River June 2007 Photo June started of well with good water levels but unfortunately this did not last long as little or no rain fell for the whole month. The second salmon of the season was landed on the 1st June by Ian Swanson, a nice sea liced 12 pounder from the Pot on the worm. Monday the 4th saw Kevin Beales land a 9lb Salmon from the Built Inner and George Doull Jnr started his season with one at 9lbs from the Railway Bridge Pool and another at 12lb 10 oz the following day, both on the worm. The long drought continued until the 30th of May when we were blessed with 32mm of rain and this saw the river at last in spate. The month drew to a close on the 31st with the river running high and dirty.
The seasons toatal to date is still only one but now with good levels lets hope for a productive June. !!

30.04.07 - Wick River March & April 2007

As April drew to a close the River still has to produce its first Salmon of the season. Water levels have been very low with little or no rain throughout the month. The 3rd week of the month saw a slight rise in levels which was short lived and despite the odd fish spotted, angling conditions have been far from ideal with the low water and hot sunny days.
Looking back at the club records as far as 1968, the latest first fish recorded was in the 11th May 1985. Lets hope we can get some rain soon !!!

28.02.07 - Wick River February 2007

The River opened on the Monday 12th February, but was unfishable due to another large spate. A few rods ventured out on the Saturday and and some Kelts were landed.
High water levels for most of the month. No fresh Salmon reported.

31.10.06 - Wick River October 2006

Wick River October 2006 Photo The only decent spate of the season arrived on Monday the 2nd October and as it began to fall on the Tuesday the river was well covered for the last ramaing three days of 2006.

The total for the season has still to be confirmed as not all the permits have been returned yet . The running total at 31st Oct stands at 492Salmon.
On the 26th the largest spate in recent years flooded the river and many surrounding areas. The photo taken by Paul Steven shows the Bridge crossing the river at Bilbster.

The Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 6th December in the Seaforth Highlander Club at 7.30pm.

30.09.06 - Wick River September 2006

The month saw quite a few anglers reporting reasonable numbers of Salmon caught despite any major spate. Brenda Green had her first of the season, a nice 3.5 lbs grilse froms the Grilse Pool on the 9th. A good stock of fish was now building up in the Strath area and with a rise in levels around the16th sport was good with Andy Harris, George Gunn, Charlie Stewart, Sandy Moran, Graham Shepherd & George Doull all taking 3 a piece. 31.08.06 - Wick River August 2006

Wick River August 2006 Photo At last the rain has come but we only had a small spate with the river rising just over a foot on Wednesday the 2nd but quite a few fish ran and sport was reported to be good. Thurs & Friday catches were good and lots of anglers were taking thier 3 fish total for the day. 11 Year old Jamie Swanson landed a 9 pounder on Fly from the Pot and his 13 Year old brother Gordon had a nice sea liced grilse also from the Pot on Thursday. On the 21st we had an inch of rain which was fairly localised to the Wick area and a 2 foot rise from the Haster burn saw 12 - 15 Grilse being reported on the day all from McPhails. Sport was short lived as the river quickly fell back to summer level in typical Wick style. The remainder of the month saw the odd fish being caught from the low reaches.

31.07.06 - Wick River July 2006

July was recorded as one of the hottest and driest months in recent years and this weather shrunk the river to its bare bones. The only consulation for the anglers were reasonable numbers of Grilse were moving in and out of the low reaches on the high tides.
Local Angler Jimmy Dunnett kick started the month with a nice brace from Wullies Pool on the 4th and later that day Jim Hindmarch landed one from the Wellies. The river was very low at the end of the month but a few grilse were starting to show in the estuary.

31.05.06 - Wick River May 2006

Wick River May 2006 Photo The third Salmon of the season fell to Dr Bobby Echavarren on the 4th May and weighed in at 10lbs and was taken from Durrands on a Silver & Blue Toby. On the 8th James Ross had one at 8.5 lbs from the Strath on the worm. The following week saw the river running low with no salmon being caught.

30.04.06 - Wick River Report April 2006

Wick River Report April 2006 Photo The long awaited first Salmon of the 2006 season has been landed by Geoff Henstridge. The scale perfect beauty was taken from the bend at the tail of the " long shank " on a size 6 Orange Shrimp Fly on the 10th April and weighed in at a cracking 12 lbs 8 oz.
The second of the season was landed less than an hour later by Neil Groat , again from the long shank and was taken on a 1 inch Pot Bellied Pig Tube Fly. Neils Salmon was 7 lbs 8oz.
Geoffs Salmon was 32" long and scale readings showed that it spent two years as a smolt in freshwater before migrating to sea in 2004. It then spent two winters at sea before returning as a maiden fish this year.
Both Salmon were sea liced and a larger image of both fish can be viewed in the photo gallery. Photo taken by Robert MacDonald. ( Northern Studios )
Despite good water levels and large spring tides no more Salmon were recorded for the month.

31.03.06 - Wick River Feb & March 2006

No fresh Salmon were caught during the opening two months. This was particularly disappointing during March as all the other neighbouring North River's were reporting good catches of Spring Salmon.

23.11.05 - Wick River November 2005

Wick River November 2005 Photo CATCH RETURNS

05.10.05 - Wick River October 2005

The photo shows the the Dyke End looking ideal with a stiff upstream breeze.

31.08.05 - Wick River Report August 2005

Wick River Report August 2005 Photo The Assosciation enjoyed a reasonable August despite the low water conditions for most of the month. At least 50 Grilse were reported to have been caught. Catches were spread throughout the river from the Grilse Pool right up to Badlipster, with the fly accounting for a large percentage of the fish, particulary from the low river during the days of high wind.

30.06.05 - Wick River Report June 2005

Wick River Report June 2005 Photo The first half of June was highly encouraging with quality Salmon being caught consistantly up until the 16th , when water levels became impossible.

The month kicked off in style with Eddie Beattie landing a fine 16lb Salmon from the Pot on a small tube fly on the 2nd of June. The next day there was a huge spate with the river bursting it's banks and was unfishable, however on the 4th and still running very high and coloured brothers Kenneth and Neil Henderson both had a fish at 11lb and 9lb respectively from the Flag Pool on fly.

Monday the 6th saw the river in fine trim and running clean and over the next ten days there was an early summer bonanza.

Successful anglers included Dave Scadding with three (13 lb, 12 lb and 10 lbs on fly) Alan Farquhar ( a brace in the Pot on fly ) Walter Crothers ( 11 lb and 9 lbs from Bilbster on fly ) Andy Harris ( 11 lbs from the Wash Pool on a shrimp fly) Willie MacKay (10 lbs from the Flag Pool on fly ). 31.05.05 - Wick River Report May 2005

Wick River Report May 2005 Photo Catch retuns for May were quite good this year given the good amount of water, with at least 18 Springers being reported.

On the 7th Brian Thacker landed an 8 pounder from Wullies Pool on the fly. During the week of the 9th seven salmon were recorded by
Anglers...Joe Hendry (11 lbs from the Strath) , George Doull snr (8 lbs in Fingers Pool), Junior member Richard Newlands (8 lbs from the Willow Pool), Tom Macgreror ( 2 from the Pot at 12 & 9 lbs), Jimmy Dunbar ( 11 lbs from the Mill Stream's) all on the worm. Andy Harris also had a 9 lb Salmon from Tarroul on a tube fly.

30.04.05 - Wick River Report April 2005

Wick River Report April 2005 Photo April started with high expectations with the start of the worm but nothing was taken until we got a slight rise of water on the 5th. Donald Newlands landed a fresh 10lb Salmon from the Shepherds and James Ross one at 7lbs from the Pot, both were taken on the worm.

The highlight of the month came on the 11th when William Newlands landed a magnificent Cock Salmon weighing in at a superb 24lb 5ozs from Tarroul. His fishing companion, Alexander McPhee also had a 7lb fish from the same pool shortly afterwards, again on the worm.

Williams Salmon was 38" long and scale readings showed that it had been a two year smolt followed by three winters at sea.

The last reported salmon of the month fell to Brian Maclean, a nice 7 pounder from the Built Inner on the 19th. The later part of the month saw the river running very low.

31.03.05 - Wick River Report March 2005

Wick River Report March 2005 Photo The start of March saw some very low water temperatures and very few kelts were reported.

But on the 21st we had a huge spate which fined down to near perfect conditions by the 23rd and Mike Henstridge took advantage of this and landed the first "rod caught " salmon of the 2005 season.

Mike's 7.5lbs Springer was caught on a 1.5inch Willie Gunn Waddington from the Flag Pool at Watten. This was Mike's first-ever outing on the Wick as he just joined the Association that morning. He also lost another fish after that in the Mill Streams.

The next day saw David Plowman take a 9lb Salmon on a Cascade Copper Tube from the tail of Tarroul. A few other anglers reported seeing and hooking fish the same day but no more was landed until the 31st, when Local Dr Borja Echavarren ( Dr Bobby ) tempted a 7lb Springer to a blue Toby again from Tarroul. This was also Bobby's first Salmon from the Wick.

28.02.05 - Wick River Report February 2005

Wick River Report February 2005 Photo The river opened on Friday 11th February and angling activity was very light, although some kelts were reported to have been caught in the lower parts of the river.

On the 16th George Doull Jnr found the remains of an ottered Salmon on the bank whilst fishing at the mill streams area. The damaged fish was examined by many members and scales were then sent away to be analised at the Freswater Laboratory at Faskally. The results of thier tests confirmed that this was a fresh run salmon , having migrated to sea as a two year old smolt in 2003 and returned to fresh water after two sea winters. The weight was estimated to be approx 8-9 lbs.

The next few days saw the river being fished a bit harder but to no avail. Mr Otters success proved that the Wick does indeed have the potential of giving an opening day fish !!
